Most “how to start affiliate marketing” guides give you eight steps and a promise.
This one gives you a 90-day plan: what to do, what to measure, and when to change course if nothing is working.
It also folds in the basics of how affiliate marketing works and what “starting a business with no money” really costs, because those three questions are the same question.

How This Site Makes Money (and What I Can’t Promise)
This site earns commissions from Systeme.io. Links labeled “affiliate link” pay me if you sign up through them, at no extra cost to you. Full details are on the affiliate disclosure page.
So you should know two things.
- I’m biased toward the tool I promote, which is why I explain its weak points below.
- I’m not going to quote income numbers I can’t prove. Affiliate results vary enormously, and I don’t know of a reliable statistic for what a typical beginner earns.
Affiliate Marketing in 90 Seconds
A company gives you a unique link.
You recommend its product. Someone clicks, buys, and the company pays you a share.
That’s all it is.
| Player | Role |
|---|---|
| Merchant | Makes the product, runs the program, pays commissions |
| You (the affiliate) | Recommends the product with your tracking link |
| The customer | Usually pays the same price with or without your link |
| A network (sometimes) | Tracks clicks and handles payouts when the merchant doesn’t do it in-house |
Five terms you’ll see everywhere:
- Commission: what you earn per sale (a percentage or a flat fee).
- Recurring commission: paid again each billing cycle while the customer stays subscribed.
- Cookie window: how long after a click a purchase still counts as yours.
- Attribution: how the program decides who gets credit (often the last click).
- Payout threshold: the minimum balance before you’re paid.
“No Money” Is Real, but It Isn’t Free
You can start without a budget. You can’t start without paying something.
| Cost | Free option | When you may need to pay |
|---|---|---|
| Funnel, email list, automation | Systeme.io free plan (3 funnels, 2,000 contacts, unlimited emails) | More than 3 funnels, 2,000 contacts, or more than 1 automation rule |
| A website or blog | A free funnel page or blog on a free plan | Your own domain and hosting (a small recurring cost) for a serious content site |
| Content creation | Your phone, free recording and design tools | Better audio or software, only if it limits you |
| Traffic | Search, video, one social channel | Ads, only once you can calculate what a visitor is worth |
| Your time | Yours to spend | Always. This is the real cost |
Faster-cash alternatives: if you need income in weeks rather than months, a service you already know how to deliver (freelancing, coaching) can pay sooner than affiliate content, which usually takes months to gain traction. Digital products and courses sit in between. Many people run a service for cash flow and build affiliate content alongside it. Models like dropshipping are often marketed as “free,” but typically need product or ad spend.
Pick a Niche You Can Prove Experience In
Google rewards content that shows first-hand experience, and readers can tell when you haven’t used what you recommend. That should shape your niche choice.
A niche passes if:
- You can name ten content ideas without straining.
- There are at least three products worth recommending, with affiliate programs.
- You can use those products yourself and show it (screenshots, results, dates).
Starting points where tools pay recurring commissions: online business and marketing software, personal finance tools, health and fitness programs, tech tools, and hobby communities. Pick one and go deep.
Score Any Affiliate Program Before You Join
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| One-time or recurring commission? | Recurring payouts compound; one-time payouts reset every month |
| How long is the cookie, and how is credit decided? | Short windows and last-click rules can cost you sales |
| What’s the payout threshold, schedule, and method? | It must be available in your country |
| Is there a holding period or refund clawback? | Commissions on refunded sales can be reversed |
| What do the terms forbid? | Rules on ads, trademarks, and email can end your account |
| Would you use the product yourself? | Honest reviews need real use |
| Is the product good for your audience? | High commissions on a poor fit earn nothing |
Worked example: the Systeme.io program
What’s reported across sources: a 60% lifetime recurring commission, free to join, a $30 minimum payout, paid monthly via PayPal or wire transfer, and a holding period before commissions are paid.
What sources disagree on: the cookie window (reports range from 60 days to a year to lifetime), the exact payout date, and how last-click attribution is handled. Read the terms on the official program page before you plan around any of them.
What the commission looks like per referral (60% of the monthly-billed price):
| Referral’s plan | Your monthly commission |
|---|---|
| Startup ($17) | $10.20 |
| Webinar ($47) | $28.20 |
| Unlimited ($97) | $58.20 |
Referrals on annual billing pay less per month, some referrals will cancel or be refunded, and most free sign-ups never upgrade. That last point is the one that matters for your math.
Its weak points as a product: simpler automation than premium tools, plainer templates, email-based support, and free-plan limits. If your audience needs those things, say so honestly in your reviews. See our program guide and product review.

Funnel Math for Affiliate Income (Illustrative)
Income follows a chain, and each link is smaller than the last:
Visitors → free sign-ups → paid upgrades → monthly commission.
Here’s an example with assumptions, not benchmarks:
- 1,000 visitors read your content.
- 10% sign up for the free plan: 100 sign-ups.
- 5% of those later upgrade to Startup: 5 paying customers.
- 5 × $10.20 = about $51 a month, recurring while they stay subscribed.
Change any link and the result changes. Double the traffic, double the sign-ups, or improve the upgrade rate, and income rises. Cut any of them, and it falls. The takeaway isn’t a number. It’s that traffic is the bottleneck and that earnings arrive slowly because upgrades happen after sign-up.
Your $0 Stack
One free platform can hold your lead magnet, email list, and automation.
On Systeme.io’s free plan that means 3 funnels, 2,000 contacts, unlimited emails, 1 course, 1 blog, and 0% platform transaction fees. You get only one automation rule, so plan it: for example, one rule that adds new sign-ups to your welcome campaign. More details are in our free plan guide.
Use it to build:
- A lead magnet related to your niche (a checklist or short guide).
- An opt-in page and a thank-you page (see the funnel guide and the lead magnet guide).
- A welcome sequence (see the email automation guide) where you recommend tools you’ve actually used.

Write Content That Earns Trust
Publish in this order, from easiest to most competitive:
- Tutorials that solve one problem you’ve solved yourself.
- Honest reviews of tools you’ve used, with real screenshots and the downsides included.
- Comparisons once you’ve used (or credibly researched) both options.
What shows real experience: your own screenshots, dates, specific results (including failures), and details a non-user couldn’t know. Google’s guidance for review content (see its guide to high-quality reviews) emphasizes exactly this.
What hurts you: copied manufacturer descriptions, mass-produced pages with no experience behind them, and pages that exist only to hold links.
Follow the Rules From Day One
This is general information, not legal advice. Check the rules where you and your audience live.
- Disclose clearly and near the link. A footer-only notice isn’t enough. In the US, the FTC’s endorsement guidance expects clear and conspicuous disclosure.
- Mark affiliate links with
rel="sponsored". Google asks for this (see its outbound links guidance). - Read the program’s terms. Rules on paid ads, branded keywords, and email can differ from program to program.
- Get consent for email, include an unsubscribe link and your mailing address, and publish a privacy policy.
- Check payouts and tax. Confirm the payout method works in your country, and look up how affiliate income is taxed where you live.
The 90-Day Plan
Days 1–14: Set up
- Choose a niche that passes the three-part test.
- Score 2–3 programs with the table above and join one or two.
- Open your free platform and build your opt-in page and thank-you page.
- Write your welcome sequence.
✔ Checkpoint: you can sign up on your own page and receive the welcome email.
Days 15–45: Publish
- Publish around 8–10 helpful pieces (tutorials first, reviews next).
- Add a clear disclosure and your lead magnet to each.
- Pick one traffic channel and stay with it.
✔ Checkpoint: your pages are indexed, your funnel works, and you’ve started to collect email sign-ups (even a handful).
⚠ If nothing is indexed or visited: check that pages are crawlable, titles match what people actually search, and you’re publishing for questions with real demand.
Days 46–90: Improve
- Update your best pages with what you’ve learned.
- Add comparisons now that you have real experience.
- Email your list a useful message every week or two, with a recommendation where it fits.
- Track visitors, sign-ups, clicks on affiliate links, and conversions.
✔ Checkpoint: you know which pages bring visitors, which bring sign-ups, and which (if any) bring commissions.
⚠ If you have traffic but no sign-ups: fix the opt-in promise. If you have sign-ups but no clicks: fix the emails. If you have clicks but no sales: reconsider the offer or whether it fits the audience.
Kill criteria: if after 90 days of honest effort you have no traffic and no sign-ups, change the niche, the channel, or the approach before adding more content. Another 90 days of the same thing isn’t a plan.
What Can Go Wrong
- Dependence on one program. Its terms can change. Diversify once you have traction.
- Churn and refunds. Recurring income only recurs while customers stay.
- Slow results. Search traffic takes time, and most months early on will pay little or nothing.
- Search volatility. Rankings can shift, which is why an email list matters.
- Burnout. Choose a pace you can sustain for months.

FAQ
How do I start affiliate marketing with no money?
Choose a niche, join one or two programs, set up a free funnel and email list, publish honest content showing real experience, and track your numbers for 90 days. The real cost is your time.
Do I need a website?
Not at first. A free funnel page and an email list can work, but a content site (blog or video channel) is usually what brings traffic over time.
How long until I earn my first commission?
It varies widely. Content-based affiliate marketing typically takes months, and some beginners earn nothing in the first few. A service business can earn sooner.
Is recurring commission better than one-time?
Usually for long-term income, because it compounds while customers stay. It depends on churn and on whether the product is a good fit for your audience.
Do I have to disclose affiliate links?
Yes, in most places. Disclose clearly near the link, and mark links with rel="sponsored".
Can I promote Systeme.io without paying for it?
Yes. The free plan lets you use and review the product, and the affiliate program is free to join according to reports. Confirm current terms on the official program page.
Which is the fastest no-money business to start?
Selling a service you already know how to deliver. Affiliate marketing, digital products, and courses usually take longer but can scale without trading hours for money.
What if I fail my 90-day checkpoints?
Use the diagnosis lines in the plan: traffic problem, opt-in problem, email problem, or offer problem. Change one thing, then measure again.
Where to Go From Here
Start small. Pick one niche, one program, one channel, and measure for 90 days.
